While Australia's home ownership rate reached a peak of 73% in 1966, a significant deterioration in housing affordability over the last thirty years is driving increasing inequality, falling home ownership and could threaten social cohesion if it persists. AMP’s Chief Economist, Dr. Shane Oliver looks at why encouraging decentralisation, boosting supply and tax reform could be the key to improving housing affordability.
